Graveyard Riviera
by Sanjay Kapur
(Written to the tune of the song, “Sounds of Silence” by Simon & Garfunkel)
Hello Mister President
The people ask of you again
You are already the most powerful
man on the planet, so why do you pull
The strings, that mar the destinies
of so many
Who wish just to live freely
When we say “Mister President”
It’s not just Trump or Benjamin
Or even Ayatollah Khameini
or Vladimir Putin or Zelenski
It’s a plea to all power holders who are
strong and mighty
Stop the wrongful killings please
Gory scenes that once were rare
Now on our screens are daily aired
Horrifying clips of destruction
Whole cities and homes bombed to rubble
Spattered brains, chunks of flesh and torn limbs dot seas of grey
every which way
And those not killed, despair
And Sirs, all mighty Presidents
When would you say these wars will end
Will it be when you’ve struck winning deals
Ousted survivors with forged famines
Or when you’ve laid the ground for your most cherished desire
The Riviera
Upon the graves of the weak
May your souls pour forth empathy
All ye Presidents so mighty
Human lives far outweigh get-richer deals
We can’t watch our lands turn to killing fields
We’re believers, or maybe not, but we stand to lead
to succeed
as civilized, decent beings.
