My Erstwhile Friend

When I visited your home today
to condole your wife, deceased,
Normal it was to see you cry,
your world in grief besieged

A few soft words and I sat down,
watching you in your sorrow sway,
But beyond your tears – that pride and anger
Told me the truth, gave you away

It struck my mind then, loud and clear
You’d never speak well of your mate;
“No dowry, no looks”, you would bemoan,
and had often shown her the gate
